The cub had a successful outing to Galway on Saturday. Competing at what is generally agreed
to be the premier head of the river event in the country the club came away
with 2 pennants; Men’s Intermediate 8 and ladies Junior 16 coxed quod.
Men’s Intermediate eight crew of bow Jack
Gleeson, 2 Mark Callanan, 3 Dan Murphy, 4 Graham Sheehan, 5 Jonathan Deasy, 6
Dave Walsh, 7 Eoin Hennessy and stroke Vinny Manning coxed by Mike Griffen had
9 second to spare on Commercial in a winning time of 13:09.4 this was the 4 the
fastest time overall on the day and a very encouraging performance from this
very talented group of athletes. It maintains the good form which they have
shown over the head season and follows wins at NUIG head, Cork Head and a good
showing at St Michaels head. The group was put together in the autumn by Patrick Duggan and has been coached by Brian Crean
since December. If they maintain their form they will be a force to be reckoned
with throughout the season. A further indication of their potential was
demonstrated by the performance of the men’s intermediate four on Saturday.
They finished a mere 3.5 seconds behind the category winners, Tribesmen. Bow
Eoin Hennessy, 2 Dave Walsh, 3 Jonathan Deasy and stroke Vincent Manning coxed
by Mike Griffin.
The Ladies Junior 16 coxed quad scull of
Grainne Deasy, Linda Murphy, Grace Collins, Niamh Fehily stroke and coxed by
Ciara McSweeny recorded a winning time of 16.47 to beat Tribesmen by a full 47
seconds. The 2nd Boat Club J16 quad scull was only 1 second behind Tribesmen.
Their coaches Martin Kilbane, Dan Murphy & Terence Mc Grath expressed
satisfaction with their performance.
The club’s next outing is likely to be
Limerick Regatta on Sat 3rd May
