The annual Cork Boat Club dinner dance took place on Friday 23rd November at the Silver Springs Moran Hotel.
Over 180 club members both past and present attended the dinner dance and a fantastic night was had by all.
The Denis Mac Sweeny Memorial Trophy was on display at the entrance to the dinning area. This trophy was specially commissioned by Keanes Jewellers and donated by friends and family of Denis Mac Sweeny. This amazing trophy, which is a to scale copy of Blackrock Castle, was organized by Brian Crean.
As usual, Jack Buckley opened the night by saying grace and Martin Kilbane proposed a special toast to the great Denis MacSweeny. Sadly, this was our first dinner dance without Denis Mac and an anonymous friend donated a bottle of wine to every table for a toast to Denis.
Terrence McGrath presented our international oarsmen and women with an exclusive sterling silver pennant. The award was specially commissioned to acknowledge our international oarsmen and women and depicts the Cork Boat Club logo and the year of their first international cap. All past international oarsmen and women will receive one of these awards over the next year.
The Club Person of The Year Award was tightly contested and a special acknowledgement was made by Martin Kilbane to Daniel Murphy, Patrick Duggan, Ger Field and Jim Hal. However, no dispute could be made against Alison Downey winning Club Person of The Year 2007. Ali Downey has played a pivotal role in the success of the junior women. Martin remarked on how Ali could often be seen pushing a buggy with young Jack, down the slip whilst coaching the beginners; a true sign of her dedication to the club. Ali has competed internationally and came 6th in the World U23 World Championships. A sterling silver trophy depicting the Club Coat of Arms was presented to Ali by Martin Kilbane. It is the first time the trophy has been used to acknowledge the club person of the year. The trophy was originally presented by The Lord Mayor of Cork, Mr Joe O'Flynn on the centenary of the club in 1999.
Terrence McGrath expressed his thanks to Emmett Walsh and Martin Kilbane on organising the annual dinner dance which was a tremendous success.
