The Inter Men were extremely successful in last Saturday's Marlow Regatta at the magnificent Dorney Lake. They reached both the Senior 3 4+ and Senior 2 4- finals.
The sweltering heat (34-36°C) made rowing conditions very difficult but all crews dealt well with this. First off was the Senior 3 4+ in their heat at 9:15am where the winner qualified for the final and second and third qualified for the repechage. They didn't have the best of starts but quickly responded and moved through the field and at 1250m took the lead. They extended that lead out to 1.5lengths to take first place and qualify for the final. Next up at 10:40am was the Senior 2 4-. They had a powerful start and after 500m were in second position and in a good stride. After 1000m they and first place Durham University had extended a sizeable lead over the rest of the field and rowed it home to qualify for the final.
After business had been taking care of in the fours it was the Senior 3 8+ next. A strengthening head wind was beginning to blow for their heat at 11:35am and after going down a length to most of the field off the start they showed great composure to come back and climb through the field and finish third and qualify for the Semi's. They knew that if they started the same as they had in the heat that it would take a massive effort to qualify for the final as the competition was of a very high standard. Thankfully they made a great start and lead at 500m and held that lead until the finish to qualify for the final in style.
Unfortunately they were now left with the predicament where they were in three finals but they were all within a very short time frame. The decision was made to scrap the two fours and concentrate all their efforts on the 8+. At this stage the head wind was blowing quite strongly and the heat was still in the mid 30's so conditions were terribly difficult. After their fastest start of the day they were 5th at the 500m mark and came back at the field rating a consistent 37 down the course. At 1500m they were in fourth in a tightly packed bunch and pushing hard for third place. Unfortunately in the last 100m they were passed out by Isis BC and ended up finishing 5th in an grueling final in which only 1.8 seconds separated the middle 4 crews.
