The members of Cork Boat Club wish to express their deepest sympathies to the MacSweeny family for their loss.
Denis MacSweeny 25th September 1954 - 10th November 2006
Denis MacSweeny was a member of Cork Boat Club for many years where he rowed from a young age.
In 1993 he was elected President of the club a position that he held the following year. In 1995 he was elected chairman and filled this position until 1999. In 2002 he was re-elected as chairman and completed another two seasons. In total Denis gave ten years of service as a major officer in the club. This is just an indication of the type of man he was.
Denis was one of the greatest club men the club has ever had. He brought life to the club in the hard years and gave hope and friendship to everyone he came in contact with. If you knew Denis then you were his friend and he had lots of friends.
Denis also brought his business skills to the club and had a very good hard working ethos. If there was a boat to be bought or member to be diciplined he would make it happen. Even in the hard times there was nothing that could not be achieved. "No" did not exist in his vocabulary.
My most fond memories of Denis was as a vetern oarsman when he led an aging group of whinge bags to the Head of The Charles regatta in Boston on four occassions. I owe him for this re-birth of my rowing career which I thought had ended. This has been the case for a number of other old whinge bags.
Denis cared, loved, helped, contributed and LIVED.
We will certainly miss this great man.
